TOM CUNNINGHAM ORCHESTRA
Friday, June 9
Beginner lesson with Tom and Debra 8:30-9pm; dance 9pm-12midnight
$20

We kick off this great weekend with a welcome dance featuring one of our favorite big bands. We'll show the film short that started it all, Groovie Movie, during the first band break. Don't miss the chance to meet our darling Jean Veloz in person, plus our great instructors for the weekend.

C'mon, all you hep cats! Come see for yourself why everyone calls the Tom Cunningham Orchestra "the Swingin'est Band Around!" Lindy Hop legend Frankie Manning said it best when he said, "I haven't heard it played that good since Basie!" What higher compliment could be paid to a swing band? The Tom Cunningham Orchestra plays the best Basie since Basie, the best Goodman since Goodman, the best Ellington since Ellington, the best Miller since Miller. . . the best swing music since the swing era. They've been at it for well over 20 years! During that time, they've collected the finest big band library—not modern, glib arrangements, but the original, hard swingin' charts that made swing music ageless—and that's what makes the Tom Cunningham Orchestra the best for dancing, the best for listening, and the best!

From the hit Broadway show SWING!

CASEY MacGILL AND THE SPIRITS OF RHYTHM

Saturday, June 10
Beginner swing lesson with Tom and Debra 8-9pm; dance 9pm-12midnight
$15

A prodigious scat singer evoking the spirit of Cab Calloway, Casey MacGill is at home crooning a range of material from the Gershwins to Leiber & Stoller, writing and performing music that swings. He blows a lyrical coronet and pumps a mean accordion, but his secret weapon is a six-string tenor ukulele. Casey’s CD Jump became one of the most popular of the recent swing movement and opened the door to Broadway, giving MacGill the starring role of the bandleader in the hit musical Swing! Please arrive early to ensure entry, and carpool if possible.

Wrap-up Party with BIG FOUR COMBO
Monday, June 12, 9-11pm, $10

Sadly, all good things must come to an end. Put an end to this great weekend by coming out and saying good bye to Jean, Ray, and Nick for a night of dancing to one of the best jazz combos around.

"Big Joe" Maher has been a performing drummer/singer over 30 years. His list of credits is like a who’s who of blues and jazz, having performed with the likes of Clark Terry, Urbie Green, Mudell Lowe, and James Moody just to name a few. Over time Big Joe has shared the stage with and backed up musicians such as Jimmy Witherspoon, Bullmoose Jackson, James "Thunderbird" Davis, Nappy Brown, Otis Rush, Earl King and more. After many years performing and touring with legendary DC groups the Uptown Rhtythm Kings and Tom Principato Band, Joe formed his own five-piece band, Big Joe and the Dynaflows. Big Joe's knowledge of the local and national blues and jazz scene, plus his immense talent, has helped him carve out a reputation as one of the best jazz musicians around.
