In 1943, MGM studios filmed a short called Groovie Movie that showcased a style of Lindy Hop made popular in Southern California by Dean Collins. Our heroine, Jean Veloz (nee Phelps) starred in that film. It has since become a favorite of and inspiration for Lindy Hoppers all over the world.
Since first introducing Washington, DC to this style of Lindy in 1998, Tom and Debra have celebrated the original dancers and their delicious style with an annual event. This year will feature workshops with the legendary SYLVIA SYKES, who learned from Dean himself; 2005 World Lindy Hop Championship winner NICK WILLIAMS; international Balboa enthusiast DAVID REHM; and bright new star LAURA KEAT. And of course, no weekend would be complete without our darling JEAN VELOZ and her brother, RAY PHELPS.
Your nights will be filled incredible dancing: we begin on Friday night at the intimate Chevy Chase Ballroom with local fav's TOM CUNNINGHAM ORCHESTRA where we'll show the film short that started it all, Groovie Movie. Saturday night will be a kick-out-the-jams dance at the beautiful Spanish Ballroom at Glen Echo Park with Broadway's CASEY MacGILL AND THE SPIRITS OF RHYTHM.
During the day we'll have workshops with two sets of teachers who will provide workshops in Lindy Hop and Balboa that will instruct, inspire, and excite you with material for everyone from the beginner Lindy Hopper to advanced dancers.
