Just saying the "Glenn Miller Orchestra" immediately conjures up images of the Big Band Era. Since the time he formed his own orchestra in 1937 until his untimely disappearance over the English Channel in 1944, the Glenn Miller Orchestra provided the music that was the backbone of the Lindy Hop era. Classic songs like Tuxedo JunctionChattanooga Choo-ChooSunrise SerenadePennsylvania 6-5000In the Mood, and more, will never go out of style.

The hot sounds of the jazz age come alive with the Boilermaker Jazz Band. Led by Paul Cosentino on clarinet, this acclaimed group serves up swinging renditions of jazz classics as well as some rarities through superb instrumentals and heartfelt vocals. Tonight, the Boilermakers bring the music of the Benny Goodman orchestra to us for pure dancing pleasure. Known as the King of Swing, Benny Goodman's iconic Big Band recordings of the 1930s and '40s are instantly recognizable as helping to define the Swing Era. But Benny also featured a wonderful small band that could play it blazingly hot or delicate and haunting. This trailblazing group is considered the first openly-integrated band performing in concert and dance halls of the time. Tonight's musical selection will also include songs by Goodman's Gals: Helen Ward, Peggy Lee, and Martha Tilton.

Celebrating FRANKIE MANNING MONTH with DOC SCANTLIN'S IMPERIAL PALMS ORCHESTRA at the Spanish Ballroom, Glen Echo

  • Spanish Ballroom at Glen Echo Park

Beginner swing lesson with Tom and Debra 8-9pm, dance 9pm-12midnight, $18

Celebrating Frankie Manning Month! In conjunction with the Frankie Manning Foundation, the international Lindy Hop community comes together every May to honor the original Ambassador of Lindy Hop. We'll spend the night doing the best thing we could ever do in the memory of Frankie Manning—dancing the dance we all love and spreading the joy of Lindy Hop with old friends and new. We'll be performing two dance routines during the first band break: "In The Mood," which was choreographed in honor of the 70th anniversary of the end of World War II last summer, and a short and snappy routine utilizing some of Frankie's favorite moves. The third band set will kick off with a gigantic Shim Sham Shimmy to the song Frankie frequently requested at Gottaswing dances—Tuxedo Junction. Join us and be part of the world-wide Lindy community.

When Doc Scantlin and the Imperial Palms Orchestra step to the stage, the audience is transported to the high life immortalized by F. Scott Fitzgerald in the Great Gatsby. Shake over ice, add a twist of jazz and you'll get Scantlin's living homage to the music of the era with the group bringing down the house as everything old becomes new again. The 18-piece ensemble, featuring the irrepressible Chou Chou, swings with manic abandon through the early Great American Songbook, infusing standards with new energy. The Big Band Era comes alive for a night of fantastic swing dancing.

We are soooooo lucky to catch the Aces for a last-minute trip through Washington, DC! The Jive Aces will be leaving our dance to drive directly to Pittsburgh, so that's why the times for this dance are earlier. The Aces will still play their usual three sets but with shorter breaks, so we'll still have the same amount of music with this fantastic band.

Join us for a fabulous night of manic swing dance fun with the UK's top swing band! Home grown and refined over thirteen years, Phat Cat Swinger is a 10-piece “little-big band” with a West Coast sound that brings style, class, charisma and an explosive energy to the stage. Combine their ingenious song list with a powerful 5-piece horn section, jumpin' rhythm section and their Canadian Crooner, Curtis Parry, and you've got a recipe for an instant party.

But you don't have to take our word for it! Ask Star Wars Director: JJ Abrams and he'll tell you, "There is no one better than Phat Cat Swinger..."

Or Grammy Nominated Saxophonist: Dave Koz and he says: “...These guys are the real deal! It’s almost like stepping back in time when they’re on stage—so much fun to listen to, and a total blast to watch...they’re the full package, and absolutely perfect for Beverly Hills! I can’t wait!”

From their music videos with Christina Aguilera and Snow Patrol to performances for State Representatives and even the Playboy Mansion, there's a reason why Phat Cat Swinger comes highly recommended from Hollywood to Europe.

We are lucky to be catching the band while they're on an East Coast tour. When Gottaswing friend Rusty Frank heard we had a chance to book the band, she said we were going to LOVE them! Phat Cat Swinger is a group you can't afford to miss!

Band leader Dave Shuma, an active member of Bugles Across America, started the Silver Tones in a garage. The band made it's debut at a World War II tribute in October 2012 and have been swinging ever since, entertaining audiences and dancers with the traditional Big Band hits of the swing era. Made up of musicians from Northern Virginia and based in Warrenton, the band has been a favorite in Piedmont area with regular performances that even bring out such Lindy notables as former Rhythm Hot Shot Ewa Burak! The cherry-on-top is the vocal trio of Wendy Martin-ShumaMitzi Price and Larke Pain—or is that the Andrews Sisters?
